September is when Salento slips into a different rhythm, bringing music, art and food back together in its squares, historic buildings and unexpected corners.
On September 5 and 6, Ruffano comes alive with Maru- Peperoncino in Festa, two fiery nights in the heart of the historic center, where chili peppers take center stage alongside spicy dishes, live music, performances, art, literature and the much-anticipated hot pepper endurance challenge.
From September 11 to 13, Lecce becomes one big concert venue for Piano City Lecce, a city-wide festival celebrating the 88 keys, born from an idea by Berlin-based pianist Andreas Kern. Over four days, professional pianists, students and amateurs bring music to the historic center, courtyards and historic residences, with performances ranging from classical and jazz to pop.
Among the highlights are Roberta Di Mario, performing at the Fiermonte Museum on Thursday, September 10, from 7 to 8 pm, and Gloria Campaner’s workshop on Friday, September 11, in the citrus garden at La Fiermontina Luxury Home. These intimate encounters create a special dialogue between music, architecture and the beauty of the city. The festival culminates with performances by major artists including Elisa, Shai Maestro, David Chalmin, and sisters Katia and Marielle Labèque.
From September 11 to November 8, Galatina hosts the fifth edition of Yeast Photo Festival, this year dedicated to the theme A Matter of Taste. Photography becomes a lens through which to explore food beyond the plate, uncovering stories of memory, identity, work, belonging and social change. Exhibitions, installations and talks transform Salento’s historic spaces into an atlas of images and cultures, connecting the Mediterranean with communities and stories from around the world.
